Rügen is the tourist destination on the Baltic Sea. The island records about a quarter of all overnight stays in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. In 2014, the island was the most popular German holiday island with almost 6 million overnight stays. Most guests visit Rügen between April and October - the peak season is between June and August.
By car or bicycle, the way leads to the island through the Hanseatic city of Stralsund to Strelasund. Through the Rügen dam and the Rügen bridge here Rügen is connected to the mainland. The island has an area of 926 sq km and has a maximum length of 52 km and a width of 41 km. The Jasmund National Park on Rügen was awarded UNESCO World Heritage status in 2011.

State-recognized health resorts and resorts are: Binz, Sellin, Göhren and Sassnitz.
Ferry port Sassnitz has ferry connections to:
- Bornholm (Denmark)
- Trelleborg (Sweden)
- Klaipėda (Lithuania)
- Baltiysk (Russia East Prussia)
- Saint Petersburg (Russia)
In addition, excursion steamers run between the Rügener seaside resorts as well as Peenemünde and Usedom. Further ferry connections are available to Hiddensee and Stralsund.
