The
Erzgebirge is spatially distinguished in
Westerzgebirge,
middle Erzgebirge and
Osterzgebirge. In the Erzgebirge of Saskia there are ten mountain peaks with a height of about 1,000 meters or higher. The highest mountain of them is the
Fichtelberg with a summit elevation of 1,215 meters.
In the ridge areas of the Erzgebirge, bogs are comparatively common. Important upland moors include the Großer and Kleine Kranichsee, the Georgenfelder Hochmoor and the Mothäuser Heide.

In the Ore Mountains there are about 5,000 kilometers of marked trails.
For the winter sports season in the Ore Mountains there are winter sports resorts and ski resorts for alpine and nordic ski types with more than 1,000 kilometers of groomed trails.
